So I am doing ride share from craigslist
going from LA to Austin TX
As much as how sketchy as it sounds, I think it is just more time-saving then trying to hitch a ride
John who I ve been contacting with was finally finishing his haircut which made him an hour late
But you know, you just gonna look good cuz haircut is something you don’t wanna mess with
John called, I got down from Ashley’s place as quick as I could, sitting outside of the parking lot gate waiting
There was this older Asian man wandering around the gate, Okay, creepy
(Despite the fact that I am another Asian dude just sitting there, but hey at least I am cute)
All the sudden, the creepy Asian turned to me and asked “Austin?”
I went….hmmm No…I am Boris…Ohoh, yeah well I am heading to Austin…
NO way, He is JOHN? A 40 years old looking Asian guy is using craigslist ride share with a 420 friendly post!?
He has a little Korean twist when he talks, its not much of an accent, it just that little twist that every bilingual has I suppose
So apparently we were going to head north to pick up Louisa (Totally out of the way)
Fine with me, I don’t have a real plan after all
John mentioned that Louisa is a English Activist for food waste, and she is just visiting
Woa, I love weird freaking stories.
And John himself is heading to Austin for a high end sushi restaurant as the potential sushi chef lead!
We already starting to talk A LOT. John was working as a sushi chef at the restaurant in freaking Malibu! Fancy!
He is also married with three kids, I wonder what does her wife think about him doing this whole ride share thing
We finally got to Santa Barbara and picked up Louisa
She is on her barefoot, hippie causal, and DREADLOCKS
What kind of English is that? Of course she speaks a fluent English accent
She is badass tho however, she tried to hitchhike from San Francisco to LA but only she succeed
Not sure if anyone would like to pick up a barefoot English with dreadlocks
Louisa is a very nice lady as you can imagine, I do find that we have a lot of beliefs in common
As much as how the society is wasting food, and where we stand on the homeless problem
US incarceration and the fact that US has more prisons than schools, list goes on.
We had a great conversation while John was snoring in the back seat.
John however is another talking machine as he never shuts up, but I love it!
I love stories and especially older people who love sharing their life experience and don’t mind my shitty responses
John has said so much about Asian and food history, a total history geek.
I do respect him as a chef knowing how much he knows about food and history.
This is a very long ride but it went by so quickly as I ve got the best companies
We finally dropped Louisa at New Mexico and wished her luck on find a way to get to Taos
We then picked up another girl…..Amanda..
Amanda is another story, She was born and raised in Southern Texas while she doesn’t own a southern accent
She moved to Austin 5 years ago however and she claims Austin is the best city in the US
Errrr…. Girl, let me just say, you can’t really say that if you haven’t been to Seattle
You can sorta tell Amanda is a spiritual person in some way through her talking and attitude
Turned out she was also growing up christian and she grew out of it, just like me
But unlike her, I am not quite into Shaman
I do believe in spiritual in some ways or others, but I just don’t know
Amanda likes to be connected with the mother earth and thinks that Native American are doing such good job
I agree, but Shaman scares me
Interestingly, Amanda also told me about this World Citizenship
where you can give up your own citizenship in return to join this World Citizenship
and you get to live in another counties that are part of it. I need to do further research on that!
It was such 35 hours talking to all these amazing strangers. John, Louisa, Amanda and me were all talking and arguing about what we believed in, it was awesome.
Only bummer of the ride was John kept speeding and we got pulled over in Ceder Park outside of Austin in 2AM
They questioned us so much just because we looked totally out of the blue
Asking if we knew each other, and it was a funny time looking at the cops reaction to our stories.
They however found my leftover Pot from my backpack….
They only gave me a ticket tho, they seemed pretty nice knowing I am traveling from Washington and just graduated
Man, $276 gone just like that.
Still an amazing 35 hours experience. I didn’t take any pictures just because they didn’t want to
and also I forgot to because I was having such good time.
Best luck to all of them with their adventures!
And Hello Austin TX, keep it weird.
